The nationwide seven-day incidence has fallen slightly to 807. The RKI reported 39,179 new infections, 605 fewer than a week ago. According to a British study, many patients have to struggle with the consequences for a long time.
The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has fallen again somewhat. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value on Sunday morning as 807.0. It was 821.7 the day before and 834.3 a week ago. The seven-day incidence quantifies the number of new infections registered per 100,000 inhabitants during this period.
As the RKI further reported, citing data from the health authorities, the number of new infections reported within 24 hours was 39,179, after 135,079 the day before and 39,784 a week ago. The total number of cases of infection recorded in Germany since the beginning of the corona pandemic has increased to 24,180,512. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. According to the RKI, 24 other deaths related to the corona virus were also registered within 24 hours. The total number of recorded corona deaths in Germany rose to 134,179.
When considering the values, it must be taken into account that individual states do not report data every day of the week, and at weekends, for example, Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Saxony do not, or only partially, report data. This in turn leads to late registrations on the following days. A comparison of daily values is therefore becoming increasingly difficult. In addition, in some federal states, school started again last week after the Easter holidays. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – due to overworked health authorities and because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only these count in the statistics.
Patients are often impaired for a long time after severe courses
According to a British study, only a few people who have to be treated in hospital for corona infection fully recover from the disease within a year. Women recover less often than men. Overweight people and patients who had to be ventilated also have significantly worse chances of recovery.
The study, published in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine Journal, looked at the health of people discharged from 39 UK hospitals between March 2020 and April 2021 and then assessed their recovery five months and one year later.
Only 26 percent of patients said they had fully recovered after five months. A year after discharge from the hospital, the proportion rose only slightly to 28.9 percent. The most common long-term Covid symptoms observed were fatigue, muscle pain, poor sleep and shortness of breath. “Without effective treatments, long-term Covid could become a widespread new long-term disease,” said study co-author Christopher Brightling, of the University of Leicester.
