Hotel fire in Witteveen under control after 3.5 hours of extinguishing

The large fire in hotel Het Witte Veen in Witteveen is under control. The fire brigade gave the ‘fire master’ signal shortly after nine o’clock, reports a spokesman for the Drenthe Safety Region (VRD). According to him, the hotel should be considered lost.

The fire in the relatively remote hotel on the K. Brokweg in Witteveen broke out around half past five. Soon flames were shooting out of the roof. Fire brigades from Zweeloo, Schoonoord, Hoogeveen, Zwinderen and Westerbork fought the fire. They also used an aerial platform. The smoke could be seen for miles around.

Because the hotel consisted of several buildings, the fire was difficult for the firefighters to get under control. The wind also played a part in this.

Shortly after the fire was reported, all guests were out of the hotel. No one was injured. According to the spokesperson for the VRD, the hotel was home to 45 visitors to the Superbike World Championship, which will be held on the TT Circuit this weekend. “Some of the guests are looking for another accommodation and some of them are going home,” said the spokesperson.
