GLENDALE, Ariz. — Vitek Vanecek was perfect in front of 19 shots and the Washington Capitals shut out the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 on Friday night.
Vanecek recorded his 20th win and fourth shutout this season. He has seven career shutouts in the NHL.
Conor Sheary opened the scoring in the first period and John Carlson sealed the game in an empty net.
The Capitals tied the Pittsburgh Penguins for third in the Metropolitan Division with 99 points.
Karel Vejmelka stopped 27 pucks for the Coyotes, who suffered a ninth straight loss (0-8-1). They haven’t won since April 3.
Sheary scored the Capitals’ first goal, his 18th of the season, at 8:27 of the first period. He jumped on a loose puck to the right of Vejmelka.
