The first training session for the sprint weekend in Imola took place on a wet but drying track. The riders used the slicks for the first time in qualifying. In the beginning, however, some still rode on tires in transient conditions.
The first part of qualifying was overshadowed by the red flags after Albon’s brakes on the right rear tires began to burn. The Williams rider managed to get into the pits, but there were fragments on the track.
Cunoda, Gasly, Latifi, Ocon and Albon did not advance from the first part. Hamilton advanced from 15th place with a lead of only 0.004 seconds on Cunoda.
At the beginning of the second part, the riders were warned that rain was approaching. But before it could disperse, red flags fluttered – Carlos Sainz crashed. After the restart of qualifying, it was already raining, so only some riders from the top ten went on the track to try out the changing conditions. Therefore, shortly before the end, it was clear who would not advance to Q3. Russell, Schumacher, Hamilton, Chou, Stroll did not advance. Mercedes did not have a single car in the third part of the qualification for the first time since 2012.
The third part of the qualification was interrupted again at the beginning by red flags. Kevin Magnussen flew off the track and stopped in front of the barrier. Subsequently, he got back into the pits and during the restart he was not missing on the track.
Verstappen took the lead, Leclerc was second. Then the red flags flew again – this time due to Valtteri Bottas, who parked his car. After the restart, the conditions were worse and above all there was little time. And in the end there was none … Lando Norris got off the track and crashed easily. After the fifth red flags, the qualification was not restarted.
Max Verstappen will start the sprint from first place ahead of Charles Leclerc. The second row will belong to Norris and Magnussen, the third to Alonso and Ricciard.
