The people are crazy! Where he ran for a lamb

The Easter market in our northern neighbor Romania is much cheaper than in Bulgaria, BNT reports.

For the Easter table, the media team chooses the main 4 products – a kilo of lamb, Easter cake, eggs and salad. In Ruse they cost about 43 leva.

How did it turn out to be 25% cheaper in Romania, given that the minimum wage there is over 65% higher than in Bulgaria?

With the loosening of covid measures on the farmers’ market, the Bulgarian language is heard more and more often. Our compatriots mostly buy lamb, because it is 5-6 levs cheaper than in Bulgaria. But there is another significant difference.

The minimum wage in Romania since the beginning of the year is 515 euros, while in Bulgaria it is 710 levs. That is, on the market the most important rule is with what income we buy the goods.

“Bulgarians buy because they see that our meat is fresh, not frozen. The price is high, but everything is rising – gasoline, electricity and no one asks us. And we in Romania do not live well with these prices,” added the locals.

Nevertheless, food in Romania is 25% cheaper than in our country.

And although the traders in Giurgiu admit that their prices are high, the Easter lunch in Romania costs about 33 leva. In Bulgaria, however, we pay BGN 10 more for the same products. First we choose the vegetables for the salad.

“The price is BGN 10. Isn’t it very expensive? Everything has increased by 20%. Customers are muttering, buying in smaller quantities,” said Alexander Balandin, a vegetable grower.

Many people also give up lamb when they see the price. In Ruse it costs an average of 22 leva, BNT reports. Adding eggs and Easter cake, the bill for the Easter table with products from Bulgaria is 43 leva against 33 in Romania.
