Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Germany seems reluctant to be too harsh on Russia. This is to avoid the negative impact that is feared to be too large.
In an interview with The mirrorGerman Chancellor Olaf Scholz said NATO should avoid a direct military confrontation with Russia that could lead to a third world war. That is also the reason Germany did not send heavy weapons to Ukraine.
“There is no rulebook for this situation that states at what point we are considered to be taking sides in the war in Ukraine,” Scholz said CNN InternationalFriday (22/4/2022).
“That is why it is all the more important for us to consider every step very carefully and coordinate closely with each other. There must be no nuclear war,” he added.
Meanwhile, Scholz is facing increasing criticism from within Germany and abroad for his government’s alleged reluctance to send heavy weapons, such as tanks and howitzers, to Ukraine.
In the interview, Scholz warned he did not think that Germany and NATO were justified in being warring parties in Ukraine.
Scholz also said he did not believe the Russian gas embargo would end the war in Ukraine.
“I don’t see how the gas embargo will end the war at all. If [Presiden Rusia Vladimir] Putin is open to economic arguments, he would never start this crazy war,” he said.
“Secondly, you act as if it’s about money. But, it’s about avoiding a dramatic economic crisis and the loss of millions of jobs and factories that will never open their doors again,” he said.
