Laurence has been living quietly for 40 years in her family home, in the heart of the forest in southern Gironde. Its haven of peace may soon be crossed by a TGV linking Bordeaux to Toulouse. This high-speed line wants to allow users to save an hour’s journey at the risk of giving Laurence a nightmare. And she is far from the only one. Many properties could be crossed by the train. So Bernos-Beaulac and other neighboring municipalities have decided to stand up against this colossal railway project which risks damaging the natural environment. “The general appearance of the town will change, so what the Beaulacais came to seek here in peace and quality of life, they will inevitably lose it”, declares the mayor. Creation of viaduct, cutting of forests… enough to fuel the anger of local residents. “I inquired about the noise, it’s going to be excruciating”, “These days, we always want to go faster, to win what?”, “Why do a new line when there is one that we can rehabilitate at a lower cost”, they say. Work should begin in 2024, but the construction site will last for years. The Bordeaux-Toulouse LGV will not be operational before 2032. TF1 | Report A. Cazabonne, N. Forestier
