When four young Irishmen come to town to make music, it’s not a big topic of conversation. But when four young Irish guys come to town to make music and their singer’s name is Elijah Hewson, you prick up your ears.
Because 21-year-old Elijah Hewson is the son of Paul David Hewson, stage name Bono (61), frontman of “U2”. And already the band “Inhaler” gets dazzling excitement and arouses curiosity.
Appearance in Cologne: Bono’s son does not want to be a copy of his father
Parallels between “U2” and the Sohnemann chapel are striking at first glance. Four young guys meet in a Dublin school, are ambitious and want to conquer the music world. Guitarist becomes Josh Jenkins, bassist becomes Rob Keating, drummer becomes Ryan MacMahon and Hewson becomes the vocalist and plays guitar. The band was given the name Inhaler by Bono’s daughter because her brother has asthma.
The quartet accepted unanimously, following their producer’s advice. “In order to breathe out, you also have to breathe in, he told us,” Bono’s son said. “From that moment on, we’ve been obsessively looking for inspiration, whether it’s in movies or new music.”
And so it should also be clear: The quartet never wants to be a copy of “U2”. They worked on their own sound, released the song “My Honest Face”, which at the beginning is very reminiscent of “Out of Control” from the “U2” debut album “Boy” from 1980, but then picks up its own pace. In any case, almost ten million hits on Spotify are the result and the incentive to produce your own album.
Bono’s son’s band rocks Cologne’s Stollwerck
It will be released a year later because of the pandemic, will be called “It won’t always be like this” and will go high in the UK charts. The mixture is rocking, danceable, catchy and thus memorable. A result that can be heard and did not come about in complete harmony. “Sure, there’s a rift between us, like in any healthy relationship. But we have a common goal in mind,” says Bono’s son.
Become famous with your music. And all without dad’s help. “It’s true that the doors opened for us very quickly in the beginning,” says Hewson Junior, “but they would have closed again particularly quickly if we were no good.” He is now proud of the fact that many fans did not associate with U2.
The intermediate destination in the direction of rock fame was the Stollwerck community center in Cologne on Wednesday (April 20, 2022). There they let it rip in the full hall and made you want more. You’ll have to live with the fact that with your eyes closed you can hear young Bono.
But it is clear that on this tour with four stops in Germany you no longer need to be afraid of having to sleep outside. Because the best anecdote is handed down by Ali Hewson. The mother addressed her desperate son after a burst accommodation in London: “There are free park benches, right?”
