In Boxberg-Bobstadt in the Main-Tauber district, a search by the police has probably gotten completely out of hand. A police officer was shot and seriously injured.
Update, 21. April: During a dramatic police operation in Boxberg between Heilbronn and Würzburg, a suspected citizen of the Reich shot at SEK officials. A police officer was injured – not life-threatening, as a police spokesman said on Wednesday (April 20). He was probably hit in the leg. Special forces wanted to examine the building in Baden-Württemberg early in the morning. Several shots were fired. The search took place on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons.
The heads of the Mosbach public prosecutor’s office, the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office (LKA BW) and the Heilbronn police headquarters have now issued a joint statement on investigative measures in connection with the police operation in Boxberg.
Boxberg: After shots at the police – investigations are in full swing
Police chief Hans Becker, head of the Heilbronn police headquarters responsible for the crime scene, describes in detail the operation that became necessary because a 54-year-old man is suspected of illegally possessing a weapon. Even before forces of the special task force (SEK) can enter the fenced area in Bobstadt, they are shot at. An officer is hit. Some shots also hit the house of the uninvolved neighbors. Shortly thereafter, the house is on fire. Nevertheless, seven people can be arrested without resistance and unharmed.

After the fire has been extinguished, the house in Boxberg is searched. During searches of the area and other objects, numerous long and handguns, including automatic firearms and ammunition, but also evidence that allows a connection to the so-called Reich Citizens Scene, were found.
“In retrospect, it turned out to be the right thing to do with our special forces to plan and carry out this operation. The special resources and the prudent and professional approach of the forces of the SEK have prevented worse. Nevertheless, absolute safety cannot be guaranteed even in such operational situations. Our thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery go to our injured colleague,” said police chief Becker at a press conference.
After shots at the police in Boxberg: the main suspect confesses
The investigations into the events are now being carried out jointly by the Mosbach public prosecutor’s office, the Heilbronn police headquarters and the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office. About the current status of the criminal investigation, Dr. Florian Kienle, senior public prosecutor at the Mosbach public prosecutor’s office as follows:
“The 54-year-old main suspect had opened up about the matter on the day of the crime and admitted to having fired the shots at the police officers. An arrest warrant was requested from the district court of Tauberbischofsheim against the main suspect on the strong suspicion of attempted murder in combination with dangerous bodily harm and illegal possession of a weapon of war; the arrest warrant has been issued in the meantime, opened to the accused and put into effect. In the course of further investigations, in addition to a possible political motivation for the act, the question of how the main suspect came into possession of the weapons for which he did not have a weapons license must be clarified.
Boxberg: After shots at the police – suspect probably Reich citizen
Updated April 20, 7 p.m: In Boxberg-Bobstadt in the Main-Tauber district, a police operation because of illegal possession of weapons escalated completely on Wednesday morning. The use of the police with the participation of a special task force (SEK) began around six o’clock. A gun should be confiscated.
But then the unbelievable happened: A 55-year-old man resisted the search and several shots were fired. Like him SWR reported, an officer suffered a gunshot wound in the leg and had to be taken to the hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
Boxberg-Bobstadt: shots at the police – man apparently a “Reich citizen”
Since a politically motivated background cannot be ruled out, the police have been reluctant to comment on the background to the crime. In the meantime, Chief of Police Hans Becker from the Heilbronn Presidium has confirmed that there are concrete indications from the population that the arrested man can be attributed to the so-called Reich Citizens scene. According to SWR the man was probably already known to the police for other crimes.
Apparently, the 55-year-old owned a gun – but the associated gun ownership card was withdrawn from him. Because he did not want to hand over his weapon, the police operation took place on Wednesday morning.
Shots on the police and fire in Boxberg: first details of the large-scale operation
First report, April 20, 1:20 p.m: A police operation that the entertainment industry could not have described more wildly took place on Wednesday morning in Boxberg-Bobstadt in the Main-Tauber district. Actually, special police forces there at 6 a.m. wanted to search the property of a man on suspicion of illegal possession of a weapon, but what happened then probably topped all expectations of the operation.
Because, as the Heilbronn police and the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office (LKA) jointly report in a statement, there was finally a large-scale operation by the police, rescue service and fire brigade. Already at the beginning of the operation, several shots were fired at the emergency services – a short time later the house was on fire.
Large-scale operation in Boxberg-Bobstadt: shots and a fire in the morning
After all, the police were able to arrest several people who were still in the property a little later without resistance and unharmed – nevertheless, extinguishing it was difficult. The reason: There was concern that there could still be ammunition and loose dogs in the house. In order not to endanger the emergency services and residents, it could not be actively extinguished.
According to the police in the statement, the building had to be burned down in a controlled manner, after which it was searched by the LKA Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the Kripo Heilbronn will prepare a forensic report.
A police officer was injured during the operation, but the investigators did not provide any further information for tactical reasons. Because the investigations into the background of this operation are still in full swing – the officials do not rule out a politically motivated background.
