According to RTV Utrecht The gas explosion occurred during work. A pipe would have broken, causing flammable and explosive natural gas to escape. Several homes in the block were evacuated after the leak was discovered. Shortly afterwards, a first explosion followed.

Firefighters were working in and around the building when the second explosion followed. At least four firefighters were injured. The security region is not yet able to say anything about further injuries.
The explosions caused considerable damage. The facade is partly destroyed and there is a gaping hole in the building. Emergency services have come en masse to the crash site, including two trauma helicopters.

The area is widely cordoned off. Several houses in the area are said to have been evacuated and the public is also kept at a great distance.
