Wild cats were thought to be extinct for a long time. Sabrina Streif from the forestry research institute in Baden-Württemberg explains how wild animals are reclaiming their habitat.

In 2006, for the first time, a cat found dead was identified as a wild cat after a genetic analysis. Since then, the strictly protected species has been spreading again in Baden-Württemberg.

Streif: The wildcat spread quite quickly along the entire Rhine track from France, Switzerland and the Palatinate Forest. There are also populations in the Odenwald and in the Main-Tauber district that immigrate from neighboring regions. And wherever they find a networked living space.
