De Maten, a hamlet near Ter Apel, is one of the places where such a hump is set on fire. Herman Slimbach, chairman of Local Interest De Maten, was curious whether the wood for the Easter bumps had also been stored for three years. ‘People have to get it out, don’t they’, he laughs. ‘No’, he says without joking, ‘it is mainly a lot of prunings from the last days that are brought here.’
