UNITED STATES – More than fifteen people were injured in a shooting that occurred in the subway of New York, announced this Tuesday, April 12, a spokesperson for the city’s firefighters. According to a new report released at the end of the day, 16 people were injured.
The shootings that injured at least 16 people on Tuesday in the New York subway are not currently the subject of a “terrorist investigation”, said the city’s police chief Keechant Sewell.
“It is not being investigated for an act of terrorism at this stage. We can also say that although this was a violent act, we don’t have anyone with life-threatening injuries,” the New York police chief said at a conference in hurry.
In front of the press, she described the suspect as “a black man” measuring about “1.65m” and “heavy build”, wearing a “green construction vest” and a gray hooded sweatshirt. “This person is dangerous,” warned New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, calling on the population to be extremely careful.
An important security device had been put in place at the level of 36th street and 4th avenue in Brooklyn, where the incident occurred. “At 8:27 a.m., the police received an emergency call from a person who was shot in the subway” in Brooklyn, a New York police spokeswoman confirmed to AFP, who asked the public to avoid the area.

Several images shot by users also show smoke escaping from a train. A spokesman for the fire department told AFP that “untriggered explosive devices” had been found. According to a police tweet, “there are no operable explosive devices at this time.”

New York State Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul said she was monitoring the situation and being kept informed of the investigation into the event.
Elected on security promises, the new Democratic mayor of New York, Eric Adams, launched a plan to fight against the proliferation of firearms at the end of January, after the death of two police officers shot dead during an intervention. But other dramas involving guns have made headlines since.
For the first quarter of 2022 (January 1 to early April) the number of shootings and shootings in New York City increased by 260 to 296 compared to the same period of 2021, according to NYPD figures released last week.
