The president of the Spanish Society of Immunology recommends using it in case of any symptoms of respiratory virus
SANTANDER, 17 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Spanish Society of Immunology, Marcos López Hoyos, sees “reasonable” the measure of removing the mask indoors from the 20th if the impact of the coronavirus stops after Easter.
“We have to wait until the end of the month to see if there has been an impact of the social relations that we have had at Easter and see if this has stopped or hasn’t stopped. If it has stopped, it seems to me a reasonable measure after so much long as we remove the mask indoors, especially because we are vaccinated,” López Hoyos said in an interview with RNE collected by Europa Press.
However, the also scientific director of the Valdecilla Health Research Institute (Idival) has recommended the use of the mask in the case of people who have symptoms of illness, be it flu, Covid or any other respiratory virus.
As he explained, “the concept of a ‘pandemic’ is going to take time to be removed from the world because there are many affected continents”, although in practical terms in Cantabria and Spain “it seems that we have the infection quite well controlled” given that 95 percent of the population over 12 years of age is vaccinated, which allows them to lead an “almost normal” life.
In this sense, he has clarified that the virus “has not gone away” and has advocated being “very cautious, responsible and vigilant” because “it is possible that we have to go back”.
THE FOURTH DOSE DOES NOT DEMONSTRATE GREATER EFFICACY
Questioned about the second booster dose, the president of the Spanish Society of Immunology has indicated that “it has not shown greater efficacy and the levels of antibodies that are produced are very temporary and disappear again.”
“There is no evidence to give that fourth dose to the general population,” said López Hoyos, who believes that society is “protected” with the two or three doses received and has advocated reserving this fourth for vulnerable people, such as people older than 80 years and those with immunodeficiency.
Likewise, it has transferred the possibility that COVID-19 will remain as a seasonal virus and vaccination campaigns will have to be scheduled “in certain population centers, not in all”, such as those over 70 years of age and people with immunodeficiency.
