Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russia began to move to attract the attention of Japan in the midst of the conflict with Ukraine. This is done by testing cruise missiles in the Sea of Japan.
Citing NHK, Sunday (17/4/2022), Russia’s defense ministry said two of its submarines had successfully carried out cruise missile tests. The move came as Japan-USA conducted joint military exercises.
The Kalibr missiles were launched by Russia from two diesel-powered submarines, the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and the Volkhov. This activity was carried out a few days ago.
Russia has used Kalibr cruise missiles in its war against Ukraine. The ministry said more than 15 ships from the fleet took part in the exercise.
The launch came as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the US Navy were conducting joint exercises in the Sea of Japan. The Russian exercises appear to be aimed at examining joint Japan-US activities.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its concern to the Russian Embassy in Tokyo last Thursday by telephone over the missile launch. They told Russia to refrain from taking actions that would increase tensions in Northeast Asia, while the international community including Japan has repeatedly criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
