Easter fires
Lighting bonfires during Easter is an age-old tradition in some parts of Europe, including Germany, Denmark, Austria and the eastern part of the Netherlands. The exact origin is unknown, but the Easter fires probably date from the time of the Germans, who made an offering to their spring goddess Ostara in early spring. The fire symbolized fertility and new beginnings. The church is said to have later Christianized the spring fire, or embedded in the Christian Easter.
