Leiden virologist: spring flu wave foretaste of catching up with influenza virus

LEIDEN – Although spring has been in full swing for a few weeks and the cold winter days have been exchanged for warm spring sun, a remarkably late flu wave is sweeping the country. For two years, the influenza virus was kept at bay thanks to the corona measures, so that it is now catching up. ‘We are now getting a taste of that,’ says virologist Louis Kroes of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). ‘But: the infections that are taking place now can improve the immunity somewhat in the autumn.’
