19-year-old inmate stabbed to death in juvenile detention center, 18-year-old arrested

A 19-year-old prisoner died on Friday afternoon after a stabbing in Den Hey-Acker youth prison in Breda. A second prisoner (20) was injured and taken to hospital. And a third prisoner (18) has been arrested as a suspect. It concerns three men.

The stabbing was reported around 4:30 p.m. It remained unclear for hours what exactly had happened. Many police officers walked on and around the site in bulletproof vests.

According to the youth prison, the alarm was raised by staff immediately after the stabbing. An air ambulance came to the scene, but medical assistance was of no avail for the 19-year-old man. The police and the Justice and Security Inspectorate are still investigating what exactly happened.

Den Hey-Acker says that the management and staff are very upset and calls it a ‘horrible event’. “We sympathize with the relatives of the victim, the staff and the criminals in Den Hey-Acker.” Aftercare is arranged for those involved.

More unrest at Den Hey-Acker
It is not the first time that Den Hey-Acker is in the news. Outbreaks, violence and intimidation are a recurring problem for employees. “Staff do not feel safe,” union director Yntse Koenen told Omroep Brabant earlier.

Recently a 21-year-old prisoner escaped from the youth prison in Breda. He had held prison staff hostage at gunpoint. He later died in a firefight with the police in Belgium.
