Braves were blown away by the Padres

SAN DIEGO — Manny Machado homered and tied his career high with five hits to help the San Diego Padres beat the World Series champion Atlanta Braves 12-1 on Thursday.

Joe Musgrove turned in a brilliant 6 2/3 innings for the hometown Padres. Rookie CJ Abrams hit his first home run for San Diego.

The 44,844 fans at Petco Park rose to their feet to cheer Musgrove, who left the game with two outs in the seventh.

The crowd got even more excited in the bottom of the inning when Machado hit a two-out, two-run homer. The Dominican had not hit home runs this season.

He ended up going 5-for-6 with four runs scored, two RBIs and a pair of steals. Eric Hosmer had four hits, while new designated hitter Luke Voit drove in three runs.

Ozzie Albies homered leading off the ninth inning, his second, to barely cover Atlanta’s loss.

For the Braves, the Dominican Marcell Ozuna 4-1. Puerto Rican Eddie Rosario 3-0.

For the Padres, the Dominican Machado 6-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs.
