Finland, which shares a 1,300km border with Russia, is considering joining NATO. Likewise with Sweden. Finland will decide in the next few weeks, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Wednesday (13/4/2022).

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that if Sweden and Finland joined NATO, Russia would have to strengthen its Army, Navy and Air Force in the Baltic Sea.
Medvedev also explicitly raised the nuclear threat by saying that there would be no more talk of a “nuclear-free” Baltic – where Russia has the Kaliningrad exclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
“There is no more talk of a nuclear-free status for the Baltics – the balance has to be restored,” Medvedev said.
Medvedev, who served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, said he hoped Finland and Sweden would come to a sensible decision. Otherwise, he said, they would have to live with nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles close to home.
