With a wide variety of scams, criminals in the district of Esslingen succeed time and again in squeezing significant sums of cash out of their victims’ pockets.

Believing that she was helping a relative in need, a woman from Esslingen was cheated out of a four-digit sum of money on Wednesday. The victim received a message via WhatsApp from an unknown cell phone number. The sender pretended to be a relative of the woman and stated that he had changed the phone number.

According to the police, the fraudster then got the 68-year-old to transfer money to pay allegedly urgent bills. The fraud only came to light when the victim contacted her family after the stranger had failed to get in touch.

Nürtingen: 78-year-old withdraws five-digit amount of money

Also on Wednesday, a 78-year-old received a call from a scammer posing as his granddaughter. The caller told the victim that she had caused a traffic accident that killed a woman. In order to avert an alleged imprisonment, the senior agreed to post bail. In several further phone calls, the scammers finally got the senior to withdraw a five-digit amount from his bank and hand it over to an unknown woman at a previously agreed handover location in Nürtingen.

Since the scammers are always using different and new scams, the police advise never transferring money without carefully checking the facts of the case and never giving money to a stranger, regardless of the story someone comes up with or on whose behalf someone appears to be acting.
