As LETA was informed by the Chancellery of the President of Latvia, Zelensky appreciated the visit, emphasizing that the presidents have shown special support and friendship to Ukraine and also visited the devastated cities and villages, thus witnessing the horrific result of the Russian aggression.
During the conversation, the Presidents of the Baltic States and Poland confirmed that they would continue to actively support Ukraine, both militarily and with humanitarian aid.
The President of Latvia, Egils Levits, emphasized that Latvia would support securing Ukraine’s candidate status in the European Union (EU) as soon as possible. Levits emphasized that Latvia would urge that the process of candidate status be reviewed by the EU as soon as possible, so that the Ukrainian society sees that its efforts to defend European values have not been in vain.
The President of Latvia also noted that the consequences of the tragic war seen in Ukraine only make it even more convincing that Russia and all those responsible for war crimes – from the perpetrators to the perpetrators – will have to answer for their crimes.
During the meeting, the President of Ukraine expressed hope that the Baltic States and Poland could help Ukraine in the field of grain exports with their ports. The President confirmed that Latvia was fully prepared to co-operate in the implementation of this goal.
The Presidents of the Baltic States and Poland emphasized that they would continue to support effective sanctions against Russia by the EU.
During the talks on the damage caused by Russia in Ukraine, the President of Ukraine called on the international community to understand that financial and economic support for Ukraine will be needed not only after the war, but also for the country to function during the war.
Russian troops reportedly invaded Ukraine on February 24, destroying both military and civilian infrastructure and killing not only soldiers but also civilians.
