They lost everything. Among them are pregnant women and children. These residents of a Genas road construction site in the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon, whose building collapsed on Tuesday February 22, are victims of squats and burglaries after being forced to leave their half-collapsed accommodation.
“We had mentioned that there could be looting, we were told that there would be guards”, deplores Xavier Hernandez, president of the Collectif de Montchat, who supports the solidarity kitty hosted by the Lahso association to financially support the victims.
A risk of collapse prevents them from recovering their belongings
This Monday, around 10 p.m. according to Progressthe police came to see a new burglary.
Anne Brugnera, MP for the 4th district of the Rhône, had been alerted by the causes of the collapse of this apartment building which are the proximity to a construction site which affected the foundations.
The inhabitants have not had the right to return to their apartment to look for their belongings, their photos, their lessons… They cannot go there because there is a decree of danger, risks of collapse. But knowing that there are intrusions and looting going on there is very annoying.
The deputy considers that “it would be necessary to secure the site for the safety of the residents and to guarantee the property for those people who suffered the damage. Helping these victims is a subject that requires work: better prevention protection and better support in the event of a disaster, and this, on a national scale”.
“We have to dig to make sure it doesn’t happen again”
The MP plans to bring better prevention of these risks and protection of their victims to the National Assembly.
“Legislatively, there is something to be done to better protect and better support the inhabitants. I wrote to the mayor of Lyon, at the service des balmes (the commission created after the Fourvière incident in charge of the prevention and management of building risks, Editor’s note) to ask them if they were aware of a specificity in Montchat and if a follow-up was set up. »
Anne Brugnera is “at the start of the investigations, but the fact that there are several incidents of this type raises questions and we have to dig to be sure that it doesn’t happen anymore”.
