Brantley’s 9th hit propels Astros against Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (AP) — Michael Brantley hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning, Jose Siri homered and a key double and the Houston Astros beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Tuesday night.

The game was tied 1-1 when the Astros mounted their attack with two outs against Mark Melancon (0-1), who scored the loss. The rally began with a double from Siri that went between right and center fields. Although it looked like a single, the Dominican ran to second and Pavin Smith’s pitch was late.

Jose Altuve followed with a walk, and Brantley had his third hit of the game by sending a single to left field that scored Siri.

The victory went to Héctor Neris (1-0) with a shutout eighth inning and Ryan Pressly earned his third save.

For the Astros, the Venezuelan José Altuve 3-0. Cubans Yulieski Gurriel 4-1; Aledmys Diaz 4-1. The Dominicans Jeremy Peña 4-0; José Siri 4-2, with two runs scored and one produced.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 3-0; Sergio Alcantara 2-0; Geraldo Perdomo 4-0. Venezuelans David Peralta 4-1; Jose Herrera 2-0.
