dive into history while having fun

And we went back in time thanks to children’s literature? Indispensable allies to explain History, here are three collections for children and an award-winning comic strip in Angoulême to discover.

History is not rocket science!

Starting from 7 years old

The collection, named History is not rocket science! and published by the publishing house two golden roosters, is dedicated to history. Like science popularization program (then historic) of France 3 to which the title echoes, the albums put the past within everyone’s reach.

These colorful books can deal with famous people as well as major historical periods.

Everytime, the book offers thematic double-pages with key figures, glossaries and beautiful illustrations.

Quizzes and a timeline complete the book.

They are really very playful albums, perfect for elementary school children. They allow you to revise the notions of the programs or simply to get to know famous people like Julius Caesar, Nelson Mandela or Napoleon.

A real success to slip into your schoolbag.

Starting from 7 years old

Nathan’s Questions and Answers is a very generalist collection but the albums devoted to History or historical figures are particularly well illustrated and documented.

The last book, devoted to the Algerian war, is exciting. This thorny subject is very well treated in this children’s album, mixing photographs and drawings by Emmanuel Cerisier.

Why did France conquer Algeria? Where do the settlers come from? When did the Algerian War begin? Who are the harkis?

No aspect is overlooked, not even the use of torture, the role of the FLN and the OAS. All these questions are answered in a clear and factual manner by the journalist passionate about history and sports, Jean-Michel Billioud.

It is a useful book for adults as well as for children from 7 years old.

Did Christopher Columbus really discover America? of Laurence de Cock and Joel Corcia

From 9 years old

How to approach history with children in an entertaining way?

And if the history-fiction was a track? With his new series Explorers of History, Nathan invites children to travel through time to try to understand current issues… The history teacher Laurence de Cock gave birth to Eole, a pass of time. Thanks to him, two children Sara and Jules can go back to the past.

Objective: to illuminate the present. Why are protesters tearing down statues of Christopher Columbus when he was a great explorer who discovered America? Why was the school invented? And when ?

This series is illustrated by Joël Corcia who also works for animation studios. Each story mixes humor and reflection. It makes it possible to question a monolithic and immutable vision of History, experienced by all the actors in the same way.

These are amusing little novels and more philosophical than it seems because they will allow children from 9 years old to develop their critical thinking.

of the living by Raphael Metz, Louise Moaty and Simon Roussin

Teenagers and adults

The special jury prize at the Angoulême 2022 comic strip festival is a dive into the heart of the French resistance.

It’s a masterful comic, titled of the living, published by the publisher 2024. It recounts the commitment of resistance fighters at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris during the Second World War.

The authors’ approach Raphael Metz, Louise Moaty and Simon Roussin is very particular: not a line, not a word is invented. The story was written and drawn from the sum of the stories, letters and speeches of the resistance fighters, heroes of this book. 800,000 characters, the equivalent of a 1000-page book… condensed into a comic strip.

We follow the actors of this true story, Paul Nivet, Boris Vildé, Yvonne Odon, Anatole Lewitsy among others. They tell what motivates them, their actions of resistance: leafleting, newspaper, exfiltration of prisoners… their fears and betrayals.

It’s an exciting comic in both form and content.

The universalist philosophy that founded the Musée de l’homme movement and the small gestures of resistance, all useful for showing opposition to occupation and Nazi ideologyare totally up to date.

To put in all hands.
