Last year, Ukraine was the second largest importer of eggs in Latvia

Last year, Latvia imported 38.5 million fresh domestic hens ‘eggs worth 2.4 million euros from Ukraine, which is 20.2% of the total imports of fresh domestic hens’ eggs, reports the Central Statistical Bureau, referring to preliminary data.

The Department of Statistics notes that in 2021, Latvia imported a total of 190.8 million chicken eggs worth 13.1 million euros, including last year Ukraine was the second most important egg importing country in Latvia.

In 2021, most eggs were imported to Latvia from Lithuania – 114.7 million eggs worth eight million euros, which makes up 60.1% of the total import of chicken eggs. Among the egg importing countries were Finland, Poland, Estonia, Germany and France.

At the same time, Latvian chicken egg exports are about twice as high as imports. Last year, Latvia exported 385.8 million eggs worth 26.3 million euros, mainly to Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic.

Data from the Statistical Office also show that in March this year, the average price of a pack of ten eggs in Latvia was 1.88 euros, while in 2021 it fluctuated from 1.65 euros in September to 1.86 euros in November.

In 2021, 825.6 million eggs were produced in Latvia, which is 23.8 million or 3% more than in 2020.

Thus, 438 eggs per capita were produced in Latvia last year.

Last year, 97% of the total amount of eggs produced was chicken eggs, while in 2020 this proportion was 99%.

In 2021, the number of laying hens in Latvia increased by 50,100 or 1.5%. On average, 299 eggs were obtained from one laying hen last year, which is 2.6% less than in 2020.
