The German basketball player Nyara Sabally will play for New York Liberty in the WNBA. That was the result of the US professional league draft on Monday. The team from the Big Apple chose the 22-year-old from Berlin in fifth place in the distribution of talents.
Nyara Sabally did not end up in her older sister Satou’s team: The Dallas Wings were only number seven. The games against each other “but will also be a lot of fun,” Sabally said immediately after the decision: “I can’t wait,” she added. It’s a big deal for her family. It has been her dream for as long as she can remember.

And New York is also a dream solution. “I’m a Berlin child. I have to go back to a big city,” Nyara Sabally said before the draft. The wing and center player had impressed in the past two years with the Oregon Ducks college team in Eugene (population 180,000). She led her team statistically this season in scoring, rebounds and blocks and was traded accordingly, the forecasts saw her in fourth place at the earliest.
Her older sister Satou Sabally (23) was second in 2020 and was selected earlier than any other German player. At the time, she was only able to take part in the draft virtually due to Corona, her younger sister was now there live in New York.
