Nyara Sabally will play for New York Liberty in the USA.
The team from the North American professional basketball league WNBA selected the younger sister of national team player Satou Sabally in the fifth pick in the draft.
“It feels great. It’s been a dream for as long as I can remember,” said Nyara Sabally. The 22-year-old decided two weeks ago to forego her possible final year of college and instead play for the University of Oregon in the same professional league as her sister. “5th PICK!! This is your moment @saballyjunior I’m so happy and proud. She deserves it all!! My sister plays in the WNBA!!!” Satou Sabally wrote on Instagram.
The 23-year-old was selected second by the Dallas Wings at the talent exchange two years ago, earlier than any other athlete and no other athlete from Germany in a draft in North America before her.
New York finished eighth in the main round last season and made the playoffs. There then came the end against the Phoenix Mercury in the first round. “This is a young team. I hope I bring some versatility and whatever else they need from me,” Sabally said of her new team.
First up, the Atlanta Dream picked Rhyne Howard, who played for Kentucky in college. When drafting, teams in North American professional sports are allowed to select talents in turn. The worse a team was in the previous season, the earlier it is. The teams can swap the order among themselves.
