Ms. Marvel Creator Sana Amanat reveals how her character Kamala Khan compares to other MCU heroes like Captain America. Steve Rogers was a mainstay in the MCU since Chris Evans first played the character in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. Captain America had appeared in every major team-up movie before retiring after returning the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Endgame. Steve is said to be still alive, but Marvel’s plans for the character are unknown.
On the other hand, Kamala Khan is a brand new MCU hero who is set to debut in June. Ms. Marvel is the next MCU TV show on Disney+ after the conclusion of moon knight, which still has four episodes to air. Iman Vellani will lead the series as Kamala Khan, a Pakistani American in love with the Avengers and dreaming of one day having her own superpowers. While the comics had Kamala alter his molecular structure to alter his physical appearance, the MCU show will give him powers through a kind of alien bracelet that allows him to manipulate energy.
Now, the Ms. Marvel creator explains how Kamala Khan is different from other popular MCU characters, saying she “is not your traditional Avenger.” Amanat revealed to Empire that Vellani is just as much of a superhero fan as Kamala before saying that Ms. Marvel isn’t as “smooth and smooth” like other heroes. The Ms. Marvel creator specifically compared her to Captain America and how he can bring back his shield after throwing it at enemies. Amanat’s full quotes can be read below:
She showed me every corner of her room, and she was covered in Avengers. Then she said, “Oh wait, I’m not done,” opened her closet and there was more Marvel everywhere.
She’s not as smooth and suave as some superheroes. It’s not like when Captain America throws down his shield and he comes back. She is everywhere. I can’t wait for people to get to know her.
It’s clear that Ms. Marvel is set to be a very different character, and the fact that she’s a Pakistani American Muslim also helps the MCU diversify its heroes. It makes sense that Kamala is “everywhere” in the series since Ms. Marvel will show his origin story and early days of using his powers. That being said, his arc has only just begun. Kamala Khan will likely have a big presence in the MCU in the future and should appear in Wonders alongside Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris. Ms. Marvel may be an inexperienced young heroine in her first series, but that will no doubt change as she ages and appears in other MCU projects.
Ms. Marvel seems to be one of the most unique and kid-friendly MCU shows on Disney+. With a TV-PG rating, Ms. Marvel seems to be moving away from serious spin-off shows like Moon Knight and Loki to provide the MCU with a more upbeat and lighthearted addition. Disney doesn’t seem to be slowing down MCU projects anytime soon, but with superhero fatigue being a concern for some audiences, which makes Ms. Marvel unlike other MCU heroes, this might be just what the franchise needs.
