The NBA announced this Monday the best European quintet in history, made up of the Greek Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Slovenian Luka Doncic, the German Dirk Nowitzki, the French Tony Parker and the Spanish Pau Gasolafter a vote by fans in Europe and a list of 40 experts, including European journalists, influencers and celebrities.
“European players past and present have left an indelible impact on the NBA and basketball as a sport,” explained George Aivazoglou, head of Fan Engagement and Direct-to-Consumer Europe and the Middle East in a league statement, who saw fit to recognize and honor the best European players “who have inspired generations of players and fans across the continent and around the world”.
The category results are part of the NBA 75 Euro Vote, a campaign to celebrate the league’s historic 75th anniversary season with fans in Europe and commemorate the contributions of European players throughout the 75-year history of the North American league.
Thus, the best European quintet of all time is made up of two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks, Greece), three-time All-Star Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks, Slovenia), two-time NBA champion Pau Gasol (Spain ), NBA MVP and champion Dirk Nowitzki (Germany) and four-time NBA champion Tony Parker (France).
Nowitzki, Mavericks player during his 21-year career and sixth on the list of the highest scorers in league history, he has led the category in votes.
The fan vote has counted for 50 percent of the final results., while the list of experts has completed the remaining 50 percent. They have also made a vote to know the second best European quintet of all time.
This team is made up of the current NBA MVP Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets, Serbia), Basketball Hall of Fame members Toni Kukoc (Croatia) and Arvydas Sabonis (Lithuania)NBA champion Peja Stojakovic (Serbia) and Drazen Petrovic (Croatia).
