In Russia, dealerships are now repairing new vehicles with parts obtained from car graveyards

Russia The companies, which are part of the “Car Service Association”, plan to appeal to the Russian government to support the local production of imported car parts without a license. The new car dealerships also want to legalize the repair of technical units with parts obtained in car cemeteries, as well as to make foreign car manufacturers share technical documentation with independent service centers.

Currently, the services offer car owners to repair recently purchased cars with parts obtained in car cemeteries. In order to avoid mass litigation with customers for “inadequate” or poor quality service, dealerships call for such a repair method to be legalized at the national level.

According to the authors of the initiative, foreign companies will have to provide Russian companies and services with all the technical information about the cars that were sold on the Russian market. Such data would allow specialists to organize the production of defective parts, as well as provide an opportunity to repair damage with disassembled car parts.

According to Alexander Pahomov, chairman of the Car Service Association, if such an initiative were adopted 15 years ago, Russian companies today would be able to produce the necessary parts themselves, as in China, without suffering from foreign supply disruptions.

At present, the production of automotive components in Russia for foreign cars is still in its infancy. Foreign companies were not interested in producing parts of their models in Russia, but in organizing their import and local assembly. Car services indicate that there is a particular need for on-site production of suspension, engine, transmission and brake system components.

However, due to foreign sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine and the departure of foreign companies from the Russian market, cooperation with foreign companies in the field of intellectual property remains unresolved.

Already at the end of March, a month after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, local dealerships, especially the Škoda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen brands, faced a lack of original components and parts needed for maintenance.

Soon after foreign sanctions in Russia, car owners rushed to buy the most frequently replaced parts for their cars in bulk – air and engine oil filters, brake linings, and engine and transmission oils.

We have already reported that only 55,129 new cars were sold in Russia in March, which is 63% less than in the same period last year. The sales of the largest local carmaker, AvtoVAZ, have fallen just as badly due to a lack of electronic control units supplied by Bosch, Germany.
