According to several Japanese government sources, Japan and Russia are preparing to start negotiations on a quota for salmon and trout spawning in Russian rivers. Japan’s attempt to establish an annual quota for catching fish may run into difficulties. Sources say that Russia intends in return to demand the lifting of part of the economic sanctions imposed by Japan along with other countries after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The two countries negotiate trout and salmon quotas every spring, as the region’s redfish fishing season peaks in April and May. The Japanese government intends to start online negotiations as early as Monday to discuss the details of fishing operations with Russian colleagues. Last year there was a catch quota of 2,050 tons per season.
