In New York, a man accidentally shot and killed a 16-year-old girl on the street and injured two other teenagers.
The police said the man got into a fight with a person across the street in the Bronx on Friday and fired a gun several times. The bullets hit the 16-year-old girl, another 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who were just getting home from school.
As New York Police Chief Keechant Sewell told journalists at the scene, the 16-year-old was shot in the chest. Her two companions were injured in the leg and buttocks. All three were taken to hospital where the most seriously injured girl succumbed to her injuries.
Crime in New York has increased since Corona
There were initially no arrests. The police are using images from surveillance cameras as part of the search.
It was the second time in ten days that a minor had been killed by stray bullets in New York. A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot in a parked car in Brooklyn on Thursday last week. A 20-year-old woman who was in the car with him was injured.
Crime in New York has increased sharply since the beginning of the corona pandemic. According to the police, 296 incidents involving firearms were counted in the US east coast metropolis from January to March. In the same quarter last year, there were 260.
