“Let Thebes burn!”, the adventures of the theater

Beyond celebrating the performing arts, what moved the Mexican playwright Américo del Río to write his black comedy ¡Que arda Tebas!, was to offer a critique of theatrical work and show how random some performances can be.

“As I was writing the work, I realized that the bet exceeded this first intention, because the vision of the different characters, actors and actresses of different generations, contribute the look from the human being towards his vocation”, he said.

The cast made up of Lucero Trejo, Enrique Arreola, Hamlet Ramírez, Estephany Hernández, Samantha Coronel, Luz Olvera, Miguel Narro, Francisco Yllana and Américo del Río, plays a group of actors who stage a postmodern version of Oedipus the King, but the day of the premiere an actor does not appear, so the director decides to make radical changes just before announcing the third call.

“That’s how it happens and when you see it from the outside you think: ‘this is for laughs’, even though the actor is having a hard time”.

Despite the fact that its premiere was in 2019 and it could not be staged again due to the pandemic, Américo assures that this is a great opportunity to offer a more elaborate montage, which can be seen until May 23 at the Helenic Theater.
