Three Czechs also voted against the MEPs’ call to reject Russian gas

The European Parliament has 705 members, and the resolution, which called for an embargo, passed by a majority of 513 votes.

Among the 22 MEPs who opposed the call were three Czechs: Hynek Blaško and Ivan David (both SPD, European faction Identity and Democracy) and Kateřina Konečná (KSČM, faction Levice).

Another Czech MEP, Ondřej Knotek (YES, Renewal of Europe faction), abstained. The other 21 Czech deputies were all in favor.

As voted by individual MEPs, they can be found directly on the European Parliament’s website here.

The MEPs’ call is responding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a month. The ban on imports of gas, oil, coal or even nuclear fuel is intended to prevent European countries from allowing payments to Russia to finance its military campaign in a neighboring country through payments to Russia.

“I was against it. I honestly don’t care where we get the gas from, but it must be at a price that citizens and their wallets can take, “commented communist Konečná on her Facebook comment.

On Thursday, after two days of negotiations, the representatives of the countries of the European Union agreed on the fifth package of anti-Russian sanctions, the essential part of which is the end of coal withdrawal from Russia. However, imports should not end immediately, but only in the middle of the year.
