Among the 22 MEPs who opposed the call were three Czechs: Hynek Blaško and Ivan David (both SPD, European faction Identity and Democracy) and Kateřina Konečná (KSČM, faction Levice).

Another Czech MEP, Ondřej Knotek (YES, Renewal of Europe faction), abstained. The other 21 Czech deputies were all in favor.

The MEPs’ call is responding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a month. The ban on imports of gas, oil, coal or even nuclear fuel is intended to prevent European countries from allowing payments to Russia to finance its military campaign in a neighboring country through payments to Russia.
