Samsung could switch to a MediaTek processor on the Galaxy S23 and S22 FE

There has been a lot of talk lately about ascension MediaTek to the status of top manufacturer of processors for mobile terminals. From a company with entry-level and midrange chipsets, compromise solutions, it has come to deliver top chips at better prices than Qualcomm. And now Samsung could adopt a CPU on a flagship.

Sources close to Samsung from South Korea say the giant is exploring the option of a MediaTek processor for Galaxy S23 şi Galaxy S22 FE. We may see 3 chipset variants depending on the region. It would be the first time since 2011 that Samsung relied on a chipset with a MediaTek design. In recent years, Samsung has split its flagships into Exynos versions for Europe and Snapdragon versions for Asia and the United States (as well as the rest of the globe).

The same source claims that the Galaxy S22 FE would debut in early 2023, following the model of its predecessor. It is not yet clear which MediaTek chipset Samsung will choose, but it has a good chance of being a Dimensity 9000, which is its current flagship. It is available on a special edition of OPPO Find X5 Pro and also brings ray tracing on mobile, following the Exynos 2200 model. There is also the powerful Dimensity 8100, available on GT Neo3 realms.

At the end of 2021, MediaTek had a market share of 26.3% of the chipset market, immediately after Qualcomm, which has 37.7%. It is ahead of Samsung, which has 6.6%. It should be noted that the bulk of the chips delivered by MediaTek go to the midrange and entry level area (95%). Samsung is expected to adopt MediaTek processors only in Asian markets, while Europe and the US will offer Qualcomm and Exynos.

Samsung last used 3 different chips on a Galaxy S2 in 2011.
