Dominican Grandmother Killed in Crossfire in Bronx – NBC New York

New surveillance video shows the shooting that took the life of a 61-year-old Dominican grandmother on Monday when she was caught in crossfire in the Bronx. The victim was returning from work to her house at the time of the tragedy.

Juana Esperanza Soriano De-Perdomo was walking on the sidewalk when a group of suspects got into a fight and began shooting shortly after 7:00 pm, police said.

Her family said the woman decided to stop at a warehouse near the intersection of East 188th Street Y Creston Avenuein the Fordham Heights neighborhood, just as the shooting began.

A different angle of the surveillance video shows four suspects standing behind Perdomo as they were arguing and then drawing their firearms. Apparently the woman tried to protect herself from her at a door, but she had already been hit by a bullet in her back.

In the video, a stranger is seen trying to help her, but was unable to save her. She was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A relative said the victim was new to the area and had moved out of public housing in the South Bronx after her husband died of COVID-19. She had been looking for a safer place to live, the family member said.

At the scene of the shooting a day later, prayers were offered at a vigil for the beloved grandmother, as family members were overcome with grief. Her children were in a state of shock, torn and sore.

“You just took a grandmother. A mother, she is my mother!” Said her son Víctor Perdomo. “If you don’t know how to fight with your five fingers, I don’t know how you feel like you’re a gangster… They took her away! They took her away from me!”

The pain was overwhelming, as this family is now desperate for justice, just as the community feels unsafe on the streets.

“My mother was a beautiful person. She was receiving blessings upon blessings these past few months until they were taken away from her, cold-hearted. For no reason, ”said her son Erick Perdomo.

The suspects, four men, fled on foot Creston Avenue after the shooting and no arrests have been made. It was not clear what the dispute was about.

Four shell casings were recovered at the scene. An investigation is ongoing as detectives continue to hang signs asking anyone with information on those responsible to come forward.
