Beckum. Beware of fake WhatsApp messages

They try again and again – scammers who want to steal money with fake WhatsApp messages.

A 62-year-old woman from Beckum fell victim to these scammers on Tuesday (April 5th, 2022, 7:34 p.m.). The strangers wrote the woman a message and pretended to be her daughter. She had lost her mobile phone and urgently needed to transfer money. Believing that she was helping her daughter, the woman transferred the requested amount and soon found out that she had been taken in by the lies of scammers.

The strangers often send WhatsApp or SMS and present themselves as

– Children who claim to have a new number – Relatives who are in an emergency situation – Partners who are involved in an accident

In the news, the perpetrators feign emergency situations that can be solved with a referral. The contact is usually quite personal, so that they can credibly assure their victims that they really are relatives.

If you should get a message:

– Do not transfer money – Make a personal call to the number you know and not to someone else’s – Check with family members and try to reach the real person
