A 18h15
Conference “Adventurers, explorers, archaeologists: History of the monuments of the Nile Valley since the 15th century”
Organized by Friends of Art and History Museums
Presented by Hazem El Shafei, doctor in history, president of the Institute of Civilizations of the Mediterranean Basin and the Middle East.
From the Renaissance, certain daring explorers took their steps towards the “terra incognita” around the Mediterranean basin and the Orient in order to discover, in the bowels of the earth, the origin of our civilization, putting man at the center of modern history marked by humanism.
Since the 15th century, the major pole of attraction has remained the Nile Valley. Over the centuries, these interests continued to develop, taking on new shapes and dimensions: avid explorers and collectors soon gave way to consular institutions and missionaries. The end of the 18th century, and especially the 19th century, saw the creation of great ancient Egyptian and Oriental collections, first in European courts, then in the most prestigious museums, thus allowing the emergence of Egyptology and ‘archeology.
The scientific missions are accompanied by draftsmen, then by photographers in order to bear witness to the prodigious heritage of ancient Egypt. All these efforts deployed since the Renaissance have thus given birth to a true science: Egyptian archeology and Egyptology.
