Smugglers caught in Jelgava; 15 tonnes of tobacco products were seized

The State Revenue Service (SRS) Tax and Customs Police Department has initiated criminal proceedings for possible illegal movement of tobacco products in a large amount, informs the representatives of the SRS.

In March, officials of the SRS Tax and Customs Police Department, in co-operation with the Lithuanian Customs Criminal Service, carried out control measures after preliminary operational information on the alleged illegal movement of tobacco products in Latvia. In Jelgava region, it was established that excise goods -15,055 kilograms of unprocessed tobacco were transferred from one car to another, which, according to the accompanying documents, had to be transported from Bulgaria to Estonia.

For the established criminal offense, criminal proceedings have been initiated in the SRS Tax and Customs Police Board according to the signs of the criminal offense provided for in Section 221, Paragraph three of the Criminal Law regarding the illegal movement of tobacco products to a large extent.

Four persons, three Latvian citizens and one Polish citizen, have been identified as suspects and have been sentenced to non-custodial security measures.

If the tobacco products had been sold on the Latvian market, according to preliminary calculations, the state would have suffered losses in the form of unpaid excise tax in the amount of not less than 1.24 million euros.

Pursuant to Section 19 of the Criminal Procedure Law, no person shall be considered guilty until his or her guilt in committing a criminal offense has been established in accordance with the procedures specified in the Criminal Procedure Law.
