Uprising of April 3 in Jeju: promises to restore the honor of the victims

SEOUL, April 3 (Yonhap) — On the 74th anniversary of the April 3 uprising in Jeju Island and the commemoration of the victims of military and government repression in 1948, President-elect Yoon Suk- yeol made a trip and promised the restoration of the honor of the victims and their family members.

It was the first appearance of the president-elect from a conservative party. Yoon had promised to attend the memorial ceremony during his election campaign. “It is our responsibility to commemorate April 3 in order to heal and heal the gaps of (historical) pain and fulfill the tasks of the Republic of Korea for advancement towards the future, reconciliation and life in harmony,” he noted in his speech given at the ceremony on Sunday.

“The desire not to repeat the tragedy of the past continues even 74 years later and it will continue in the future,” said Yoon, adding that “we will never be able to change what happened, but the historical strength of the April 3 uprising will be confidence in being able to invent the future. This spirit of trust succeeded in overcoming the tragedy by advancing towards peace.”

Reiterating his willingness to keep his promises for the innocent victims of the uprising, Yoon offered his condolences to the family members of the victims while wishing the rest in peace of the inhabitants who died and disappeared during the uprising and the repression on this island of beauty.
