Progress in Russia-Ukraine negotiations, will the leaders meet

A Ukrainian negotiator said tonight that Russia had given indications that the draft peace treaty between Moscow and Kyiv was at a sufficiently advanced stage to allow direct consultations between the leaders of the two countries, Interfax Ukraine reported.

The agency quoted David Arahamiya as saying that Russia had accepted Ukraine’s overall position, except for its part on Crimea.

Russia’s talks with Ukraine have not been easy, but the main thing is that they continue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti, quoted by NBC. Peskov added that Russia would like to continue talks with Ukraine in neighboring Belarus, but Kyiv opposed the idea.

Russia and Ukraine held several rounds of talks in Belarus last month before their delegation met live in Istanbul days ago.
