The candidates for the Ombudsman’s Office, from naturists, yatiris to lawyers | ANF

This Sunday the list of the 198 people who presented their documents will be published, this Monday the fulfillment of requirements will begin to be verified.

La Paz, April 2 (ANF).- This Monday, the Mixed Constitutional Commission will verify compliance with the requirements of the 198 people who aspire to occupy the position of Ombudsman. The profiles are diverse, from naturists, yatiris, gourmets to lawyers.

The people who fight in the election process have different occupations and professions, for example: there is a yatiri, naturist and bartender, theologian, teachers, a policeman, a military man, engineers, poets, social communicators, graduates in philosophy, former directors of social organizations, a former deputy, a former electoral spokesperson.

There is also a farmer, economists, anthropologists, auditors, social workers, an industrial mechanic, an agricultural technician, a mechanical engineer, a cartographer, a linguistics professor, a human rights activist, university students. Although most of the candidates and candidates are lawyers.

The call does not require a particular professional profile, however, one of the requirements is to have a background in human rights, either in promotion or defense. Applicants must meet 18 requirements.

The Mixed Commission of the Constitution published its call on March 17, on the 22nd the first applicant appeared: Ramiro Rafael Sanjinés Rodríguez, 41, a graduate in theology, a history student and a bartender. He said that rHe volunteered at the Ombudsman’s Office 10 years ago, motivated by this background, he presented his documents to fight for the position.

This Friday, the deadline for the presentation of applications closed. The last candidate to submit his documents was Edgar Marcial Crispin, from Oruro, 40, a lawyer by profession. He sent his application through a third person.

Of the 198 applicants, 60 are women and 138 men. Most of the candidates are from La Paz and there is no candidate from Pando.

Since January 2019, the Ombudsman’s Office has had an interim authority, Nadia Cruz, who is seeking re-election to continue in office. The opposition has observed her work and accuses her of having only protected the rights of people linked to the Movement for Socialism and of not having a critical position of the Government that is at the head of the State.

Lidia Patty, former deputy for the MAS and promoter of the process against former president Jeanine Añez for the alleged “coup d’état”. She presented her documents despite the fact that she is registered in the Supreme Electoral Tribunal system as a MAS militant.

Marcelo Valdez, Patty’s lawyer in the process against former president Añez, also formalized his application.

Jesús Vera, despite having a process against him for the burning of the PumaKatari buses and having been a candidate in the annulled 2019 elections, presented his candidacy.

Idelfonso Mamani, former member of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) appointed by the MAS, sent his documents to compete for the position. He was prosecuted, even imprisoned, for the alleged electoral fraud reported in 2019, last year the Prosecutor’s Office resolved the dismissal.

The name of the leader of the National Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Conade), Manuel Morales, also appears on the list. The MAS linked him to the transitional government.

Personalities such as María Galindo and Roberto de la Cruz decided not to present themselves as candidates after learning that Nadia Cruz had formalized her application.

Both consider that Cruz will be chosen to continue in the position of Ombudsman, but no longer as interim but as titular.

This Saturday, the Mixed Commission of the Constitution met to organize its work from Monday. “As of Monday, the members of the Joint Commission, as well as those assigned who have been admitted, are convened and summoned to begin the work of verifying compliance with the requirements that will last us a week, from Monday to following Saturday, and later on Sunday we will be publishing the official list of qualified men and women for this call,” said Senator Rubén Gutiérrez.

This Sunday, the 198 names of the candidates will be published in three media outlets with national circulation and on the portals or institutional pages of the Legislature.
