Inventor of the first telescope is Hans Lippershey, a maker of lens from the Netherlands. He invented the telescope in 1608.

Lippershey first filed a patent for his telescope. At that time, the tool he made was called “viewer” or which means tool to see. He claimed that his telescope could see objects with a magnification of up to three times.

The first telescope he made consisted of a concave lens as the eyepiece and a convex lens as the objective lens. This tool was first created when a child accidentally held two lenses together in his shop.

However, it turns out that many people say that Lippershey stole the design of a tool made by another lens maker named Zacharias Jansen who lives in the same city. This led to Lippershey’s patent for the telescope being rejected.

There is no evidence to support that Lippershey stole the design of the device. In fact, Lippershey is considered the inventor of the telescope and Jansen is considered the inventor microscope. Both are valuable discoveries.

Why is Galileo Galilei called the inventor of the telescope?

However, it turns out that Galilei’s telescope has a higher quality than the first telescope. Galilei’s telescope is capable of magnifying the image of objects up to 20 times.

The thing that makes Galilei better known for his telescope is that Galilei was the first to point his telescope at the sky. His actions made him succeed in discovering that the surface of the Moon has craters.

In addition, through his homemade telescope, Galilei also saw Saturn’s rings and found that Jupiter had 4 moons.

The telescope was then presented before the Venetian Senate. The Venetian Senate was satisfied with the discovery and appointed Galilei a lecturer at the University of Padua.
