Three years ago, Avengers : Endgame came to put an end to the intrigue of the stones of infinity of the MCU, initiated with the first film Iron Man a decade earlier. A real turning point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Endgame marked fans and pop culture.
Warning, this article is about Avengers: Endgame and contains multiple spoilers. If you haven’t seen it (yet), you better stop reading here.
In an interview with Deadline, Joe Russo, one of the film’s directors, talks about the tragic death of Iron Man and explains why they did not choose to kill Captain America in his place.
Iron Man had to die in Avengers: Endgame
In 2019, Avengers : Endgame is the movie of the year. He even dethrones Avatar and became the highest-grossing film in history (until James Cameron’s film reclaimed its title last year). In any case, the last opus devoted to the adventures of the Avengers is a juggernaut.
This film is also an opportunity to make some major changes in the universe. Indeed, the clique of superheroes we met on the big screen in 2012 has changed a lot.
One of the strongest moments of Avengers : Endgame is undoubtedly the death of Iron Man, the latter sacrificing himself to destroy Thanos and save the universe. This tragic and epic disappearance has returned more than one fan. But the film also marks the end for Captain America, who retires and entrusts his shield to Sam, and Black Widow, who dies to retrieve the Soul Stone.
Why didn’t Captain America die instead of Iron Man? Why the hero camped by Robert Downey Jr had to die in Avengers : Endgame ? Joe Russo explains this choice.
Sacrificing yourself to save the universe is an action that fits perfectly with Captain America’s personality. Indeed, during the Second World War, the rickety Steve Rogers agrees to be part of an experiment to hope to defeat the Nazis. The guy is clearly ready to do anything to save his neighbor. So having Captain America die in the service of humanity wouldn’t have been surprising. This narrative path was too predictable in the eyes of the directors. It was therefore necessary to find something else to close the arc of the hero of America, and defeat Thanos.
For his part, Iron Man was destined to die in the first five minutes ofIron Man, released in 2008. Moreover, as we said at the beginning of this article, it is this film which introduces the intrigue of the Infinity Stones in the MCU. Something to close the loop. But a key element pushed the directors of Avengers : Endgame killed the hero.
Indeed, Tony Stark / Iron Man is a character with a hell of an ego. What does not stick necessarily with the personality of a hero. This is also something he will have to face in the first Iron Man. But over the films, Tony Stark evolves and improves. Joe Russo says it himself: “To die for others, you have to conquer your ego”. In this way, there was only one solution to seal all this evolution of Iron Man: he had to sacrifice himself to save others. Thus, this death, however tragic and devastating, was necessary and above all more complex for the plot.
Furthermore, Avengers : Endgame was the ultimate film dedicated to the band of superheroes, according to Kevin Feige. But rest assured, the adventure does not stop there. We are invited to dive into the multiverse from May 4 with Doctor Stange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor is entitled to a new opus dedicated to his person on July 13th.
