The measure comes in the fight against global warming. Even if green energy is used, heating in the public outdoor area is no longer allowed.

Violations will result in a fine of up to 1,500 euros for individuals and 7,500 euros for companies from 30 June. If repeated, this can rise to 3,000 and 30,000 euros respectively.

Patio heaters are already banned in some French municipalities. Bars and restaurants with fully covered terraces may still be heated or cooled. Terraces on private property are not covered by the ban.

The main employers’ organization in the catering sector regrets the decision and says entrepreneurs have invested a lot in terraces to compensate for the smoking ban inside.
