Do all Swedes dream of living in a red house with white knots in a beautiful forest grove? Previous surveys have shown that the villa is the dream home of many Swedes. But when the Tenants’ Association scratches the surface, a more complicated picture emerges. Our large survey The tenants 2022 shows that reasonable housing costs are the most important thing for the Swedish people in the choice of housing.
– Many people live with the villa as a fantasy. But in reality, there are many things that must be weighed against each other: commuting times, proximity to nature, form of housing and so on. Our survey clearly shows that it is reasonable housing costs that are the most important thing in the choice of housing. Therefore, society needs to prioritize building housing that people can afford to live in, says Martin Hofverberg, chief economist at the Tenants’ Association.
The single most popular is the central condominium, 34 percent of all prefer it. The central tenancy and the rural villa are about as popular, 25 versus 23 percent choose one of those options. The villa is still an attractive form of housing but is given lower priority when compared to other benefits such as proximity to work and friends, own plot, culture, nature, and of course the price. A challenge for housing construction in the future is to develop the apartment building to meet more needs.
– It has been far too one-sided focus on small apartments in recent years, it must be broken. We need to see more mix of housing sizes in one and the same house. More lighthouses and fives with terraces and gardens open up to combine people’s longing for their own and the central. At the same time as we protect the nature we have left and the urban environments we like, says Ragnar Bengtsson, housing market analyst at the Tenants’ Association and author of The tenants 2022.
This is most important when choosing accommodation according to our survey:
Reasonable housing costs: 47 percent
Villa with plot: 37 percent
Safe area: 36 percent
Close to nature: 35 percent
Stay centrally: 22 percent
Size: 22 percent
Good connections: 21 percent
Apartment: 14 percent
Modern: 14 percent
Some place in the resort: 5 percent
If The tenants 2022:
Novus has, on behalf of the Tenants’ Association, asked more than 4,100 Swedes about their housing situation, living conditions and opinions on various housing policy issues. The aim of the survey has been to produce better factual data than has been available previously to describe how Swedes live and what their views are on housing policy. Special focus is on illuminating the tenants’ reality and living conditions. Read more about the survey here.
