Covid-19 Changes the Structure of the Human Brain? This is what the experts said

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Some people report a number of effects after recovering from Covid-19. The symptoms they experience last for a week, some even for months.

This condition is also known as Long Covid-19 or Post Covid Syndrome. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) defines it as symptoms that last for approximately eight to 12 weeks, after being declared cured or negative for corona.

Some researchers have even found brain dysfunction in patients with long Covid-19. Researchers say Covid-19 can cause mild infections, causing inflammation of the brain.

Nath, Iwasaki, and Michelle Monje, a neurologist at Stanford said Covid-19 can cause a mild infection that causes inflammation of the brain.

In the results of a study published March 7, 2022 in Nature, there is concern that Covid-19 could cause brain damage and shrinkage.

The study is one of the first to look at structural changes in the brain before and after SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study was carried out by a group of brain imaging experts who have been doing this kind of research for a very long time.

A total of 785 participants underwent two MRI scans. Among those scans, 401 people had Covid-19 and 384 did not. By comparing before and after scans, researchers can see changes in people who have Covid-19 and compare those changes with people who are not infected.

After the onset of Covid-19, the average person has less gray matter in the part of the brain that helps deal with the sense of smell. That’s an interesting finding, especially given the ability of viruses to steal people’s sense of smell, and one that is definitely of great importance to research.

“But it’s also not surprising, considering that the brain tends to change. I can name a few things that change the brain, such as learning new things, sleeping and using smartphones,” wrote Laura Sanders, a neuroscience scientist.
