Just don’t be too happy: After spring fever, it’s getting uncomfortable again in the Free State. Those who haven’t mounted summer tires can count themselves lucky. Anyone who has already unpacked their shorts and opened the beer garden season will first have to shift down a gear: the mild March in Bavaria is followed by an initially frosty April. Below zero degrees are expected at the weekend, even in the lowlands it should snow, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced.
But first there is another weather phenomenon: On Tuesday and Wednesday, as reported, Sahara dust will move from the south over Bavaria again and could turn the sky reddish or brownish in many places. According to a DWD meteorologist, the phenomenon should occur more strongly on Tuesday, and it is best seen in northern Bavaria in the evening. “It probably won’t be as strong as it was last time,” he said. Two weeks ago, the weather phenomenon made for spectacular views.
It is also unclear whether there will be “blood rain” again, i.e. the desert sand will be washed out and reach the ground. This would require rain that occurs above a high dust concentration. Today from noon showers are announced in Lower Franconia, the rain will then move towards the southeast in the Upper Palatinate. According to the DWD spokesman, it is not clear whether Sahara dust gets on the ground.
On Tuesday it will remain comparatively mild at 14 to 19 degrees, from Wednesday it will become increasingly uncomfortable: it will cool down to 5 to 15 degrees. It will remain mostly cloudy, there may be showery rain and isolated brief thunderstorms. On Thursday it will be 4 to 11 degrees cold with lots of clouds.
Punctually at the beginning of April, the weather will be completely wintry: On Friday night, the snow line will drop to 400 to 600 meters, on Saturday and Sunday it should drop to 200 meters. Even on the Main or on the Danube you have to reckon with snow, said the meteorologist. If it snows early in the morning, it could even break down at times. However, a longer-lasting snow cover is unlikely in the lowlands. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday low plus temperatures are forecast, in the night to Sunday it can be cold down to minus 5 degrees.
Air is responsible for the cold snap, which comes from far north to Bavaria and absorbs moisture on the way. It should only get milder again in the middle of next week. (dpa)
