The start of the pandemic and the first few lockdowns were an ideal time for many people to try new things. For example, many developed a passion for taking walks, while others discovered the art of baking sourdough bread. Others sought refuge in more creative expressions, such as eighteen-year-old Valencia Grace. Though she was passionate about all things performance from a very young age, she didn’t pick up her pen to write her own music until the pandemic was just beginning. For the Englishwoman, this became a great outlet for her feelings, but also a new passion that she was only too happy to share with the world. From her bedroom floor, Valencia shared some of her self-penned songs on YouTube, but she’s now ready to reach an even wider audience with her debut single “It Was You”.
Written on Valencia’s grandmother’s piano, “It Was You” is a response to a traumatic event that occurred earlier in Valencia’s teenage years. The song is about the fact that there will always be people in your life who will hurt and hurt you, both unintentionally and on purpose, but you are the one who has to get yourself over that. She gives herself the last word in a situation she had no control over at the time. The singer may only be eighteen years old, but she knows how to express her emotions on “It Was You” in an incredibly eloquent, mature way. It almost feels like a cross between peer Olivia Rodrigo and Phoebe Bridgers. Valencia Grace has already impressed us with her debut, and we can’t wait to see what else she has to offer.
